The Land of the Giants Duathlon

Christmas Duathlon for Claremorris
Don’t worry about putting on extra pounds over the Christmas as The Land of The Giants Duathlon will help to burn them up. On December 29th at 10.30am the town will be a color fest of runners and cyclist all aiming to complete the first ever Claremorris Duathlon!!
Claremorris, a well known sporting town, is new to this type of racing; a mix of running and cycling but having an ideal venue with the walkway around the McMahon Park and on into the Land of the Giants Greenway which is a real stunner it will make for a great event, even though rumor has it Giants may appear..!!
The event will start at The Square in the Town Centre, once the horn blasts all the runners take off mass start down the Main St on to James Street towards the Ballinrobe Road, turning left into Mc Mahon park on to the path around Clare Lake and on into the longer run over to the Golf course while avoiding a few larger than life obstacles! Once the run is finished participants get their bikes at the car park and cycle out toward Mayfield rolling over the hills for 6k before turning left for Carramore and left again at Malachy Fordes Country club pub back in to Claremorris, the second run takes the athletes on a 2k anti clockwise run around Clare Lake before running back to The Square for the Finish.
The Claremorris Chamber of Commerce are always enthusiastic and supportive of big events and in the past few years the Mayo Stages Rally has been a real attraction along with numerous town festival events, but an open sporting event like this holds well for Claremorris with its long history of sport in particular its Athletics and swimming, all locals have to do now is
The event has already attracted some big names and as time draws closer to the big day and taken place at a good time of year with a very well layed out coarse, it is expected to have a full field in excess of 300 participants. Red tag timing will record the timing of the event so all the splits will be available to every finisher.
The event is open to all abilities, all that is required is that you are healthy and up for a post Xmas challenge. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Land of the Giants Duathlon?
The Duathlon is a mix of running and cycling over a flat course. A
standard racer will do perfectly for the bike sections and your normal runners will do for all of the running sections. The running sections are a mix of paths and tracks but normal running shoes should suffice.
The bike sections are all on sealed rural roads, but bring a spare tube
and pump in case of a puncture as you have to be self sufficient. Remember to fit a water bottle to your bike as it’s easier to take on fluids while cycling.
The Breakdown is as follows
- 5.5k run
- 18k cycle flat
- 2k run
Total distance 25.5kms
How long will it take to complete the course ?
Elite – If you are a competitive hill runner, tri-athlete, run marathons or
cyclist. This would be if you are extremely active every week. Winner in about 1hr 5mins, lady winner 1.15hrs
Intermediate – If you are starting training with a good level of fitness, maybe go to soccer or rugby training once or twice a week, but have never tried a multi sport event before, course in about 1.5hrs and female about
Beginner – If you are starting from a low level of fitness and this is a whole new challenge for you under 1.45.hrs and female about 2.5hrs
What type of bike do you need ?
Safety first; you should ensure that the bike is properly serviced, with
working brakes; you want to feel safe and confident on your bike.
You must OBEY the rules of the road at all times as the race will be held on open roads. (The good news is they are quite)
Wearing of a helmet is compulsory while cycling; it can be left with the
bike at the transition areas while on the running sections.
Bike choices in terms of Speed
- A triathlon bike would be best for this course as its pretty flat
- A road bike (racer) would be next fastest choice, could fit TT bars
- A mountain bike/Hybrid with slick tyres would be slower.
- A mountain bike with knobbly tyres would be slowest of all.
