December 19, 2013
Event information
Claremorris, a well known sporting town, its new to this type of event; Duathlon is a mix of running and cycling but having an ideal venue with the walkway around the McMahon Park and the Land of the Giants Greenway which is a real stunner; it will make for a great event, even though rumour has it, Giants may appear..!!
The event will start at The Square in the Town Centre, once the horn blasts all the runners take off mass start down the Main St on to James Street towards the Ballinrobe Road, turning left into Mc Mahon park on to the path around Clare Lake and on into the longer run over to the Golf course while avoiding a few larger than life obstacles! Once the run is finished participants get their bikes at the car park and cycle out toward Mayfield rolling over the hills for 6k before turning left for Carramore and left again at Malachy Fordes Country club pub back in to Claremorris, the second run takes the athletes on a 2k anti clockwise run around Clare Lake before running back to The Square for the Finish.
The Claremorris Chamber of Commerce are always enthusiastic and supportive of big events and in the past few years the Mayo Stages Rally has been a real attraction along with numerous town festival events, but an open sporting event like this holds well for Claremorris with its long history of sport in particular its Athletics and swimming, all locals have to do now is take part.
The event has already attracted some big names, the event takes place at a good time of year with a very well laid out course, and it is expected to have a full field in excess of 300 participants. Red tag timing will record the timing of the event so all the splits will be available to every finisher.
The event is open to all abilities, all that is required is that you are healthy and up for a post Xmas challenge. Sign on takes place on Saturday morning December 28th from 8.30am to 9.45am at the Dalton Inn.

Claremorris Christmas Duathlon
The Land of The Giants Christmas Duathlon will help sport enthusiasts burn up the treats that get devoured over the Christmas period, with a run bike run event held on Saturday December 28th in Claremorris.
Even though the event is an excuse to get out and about and do something sporting over the festive season, there are always the more serious clients who will be out to test their fitness and hope none of their form has been lost with over indulgence.
Some of the country’s leading athletes are set to take part in Claremorris, race organisers have already signed up some of the biggest names in this sport and it’s a great chance for locals to pick the brains of these super athletes in a social environment.
Expected on the start line at the Square at 10.30am will be last year’s winner Ruaidhri Geraghty of Galway Triathlon, this year Ruaidhri will be pushed hard by Sea 2 Summit winning duo Brendan Conway Westport and Kilconly’s Michael Flanagan both who won the short and local distance events in Westport some six weeks ago.
John Greaney of Galway is a man who thrives against the top opposition and will defiantly be in the running as he is a demon over this distance.
This year there is also a relay option, the runner does the two runs and the cyclist only has to complete the 18k bike route.
With a whole host of prizes there is something for everyone to be cheerful for.
With the town decorated with lights and trees and with the athletes togged out in their club colours the event will be a colour fest for the town over the festive season, if you have never done a Duathlon before don’t worry as you won’t be the only one, for many the aim is just to complete the course while having a laugh!!
The event is being supported by Claremorris chamber of commerce, Mc Mahon park committee, Mayo Co Co and the Road Safety Authority
