Claremorris – fastest growing town in County Mayo. – Jan 2017

January 13, 2017

For the second census in a row, Claremorris has recorded the fastest population growth in Mayo with a rise of 12.5% to 4,487 for Claremorris Town and 16,088 people now living in Claremorris rural area. At 12.5%, Claremorris recorded the second largest growth rate of any town in Connaught, with Athenry rising 13%.

With Galway bound commuters from Mayo spending the equivalent of half a working week in traffic, the rise in population gives further impetus to rebuild the road and rail infrastructure by completing the M17 Motorway to Claremorris, thereby bringing Mayo onto Ireland’s Motorway Network and restoring the Athenry-Tuam-Claremorris commuter rail link to reconnect Galway with Castlebar, Westport, Ballyhaunis and Ballina, together with Tuam and Claremorris.

Enhancing the connectivity along the North-South route is of paramount importance to Ireland West Airport in attracting the vital Galway Market and is in line with government policy commitments to the Atlantic Economic Corridor.
