Claremorris set to become Ireland’s first fibre town – Speeds up to 250Mb per sec from day one

January 27, 2014

enet, the Limerick-based telecoms firm that operates the high-speed broadband Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) on behalf of the State, has committed to build a “fibre to the business” (FTTB) network in Claremorris. Together with Claremorris Chamber of Commerce, enet is inviting local business to events highlighting the opportunities this fibre broadband rollout will offer.

The two biggest employers in Claremorris, CBE Software and DeCare Dental, are running successful global businesses using the MAN. SMEs in Claremorris and SMEs considering Claremorris are being offered the same world-class broadband connectivity, with speeds up to 250Mb per second being supported from day one. This is big news for bandwidth-hungry web and app developers: the fact that fibre is delivered directly into the building will transform the speed they can do business.

The first of its kind in Ireland, the FTTB network, is aiming to provide a better broadband experience, eliminate bandwidth bottlenecks and enable local businesses to fully enter digital markets and exploit online applications. Crucially, enet stresses that this is a genuine fibre rollout, with fibre optic cables being delivered directly into premises (whereas other fibre services connect to a local telecoms exchange or cabinet and then rely on copper networks to reach premises).

The information seminars regarding this fibre rollout take place on:

Wednesday, 5th February 2014 at 7.00 pm,

McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris.

Thursday, 6th February 2014 at 12.00 pm,

McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris.

Following on from the announcement of enet’s plans, Jimmy Flynn, President of the Claremorris Chamber of Commerce, stated: “This network has the potential to fully enable Claremorris with high-speed fibre and offer world class landline and broadband services to all businesses. It’s an opportunity to create a significant competitive advantage for the community in terms of keeping, developing and attracting new companies and new jobs.”

He went on to say, “These information sessions will be important to demonstrate what the opportunities are for businesses and to highlight the possibilities with this fibre network. The Chamber strongly urges local businesses to come along to either of the sessions hear about it first-hand.”

In relation to the initiative, Conal Henry, enet CEO said: “enet are offering to do something no one else has done in Ireland and build a fibre network directly into every business. This fibre network will completely replace the out-of-date copper network which has reached its end of life – remember copper networks were built to carry voice traffic and not broadband! Our fibre carries significantly more data at much higher speed without any loss in quality.”

Henry continued: “The network will support speeds of 250Mbs per second which is unimaginable over copper. We know there is a link between superfast broadband and innovation and this network will support new enterprise, innovation and investment. I would encourage all businesses in Claremorris to come along to our special information seminars to find out how they can give their business a massive competitive advantage and help make Claremorris the first, truly fibre enabled business town in Ireland.”
